The Dilemma of the Modern in Japanese Fiction (Studies of the East Asian Institute)
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (April, 1995)
Author: Dennis C. Washburn
Average review score:

Thoughtful and interesting book
Reviews of this book have been a little unkind. It tries something new using the notion of modern in a loose but useful way. Washburn's readings of the various texts he examines are thoughtful and careful and these readings constitute the chief value of the book. His willingness to look at a variety of different texts separated by time and content is the book's greatest surprise. Sure to appeal to those who do not want to see everything become the province of narrow specialists.

Unconventionally creative and intellectually powerful
Washburn's book reflects an intellectual power and unconventional creativity that goes back at least as far as his days writing parodies of Noel Coward at Oxford University, and probably to the cornfields where he was born in Ohio. He has embraced Japan in a way that only an outsider who has come inside could. This book reads like an amusement park owner bent on revenge, a shrewd con that in the end brings screams of delight at each turn. At the same time, Washburn manifests both a strong sense of time, but also a connection between times

ECSTASY IS A NEW FREQUENCY
Published in Paperback by Fireside (November, 1988)
Author: Chris Griscom
Average review score:

A textbook of challenging 'new age'information
Content is 5 stars.Slow reading due to presentation.I would have preferred to have terms defined, better and material presented in more simple terms. Words she is VERY fond of,like 'positionality',and holigram, left me wondering how she definded them. There is dictionary of terms in the back, but it was of only limited use.She makes you work for the information, on this book, but it's worth the effort.

THE MOST INFORMATIVE BOOK EVER WRITTEN
I AM CURRENTLY RE READING THIS BOOK, IT IS SO FULLL OF INCREDIBLE INFORMATION. MY WHOLE BODY SHIVERS AND TWITCHES AS I READ IT. SHE EXPLAINS THE DIFFERENT BODIES THAT MAKE UP OUR EXPERIENCE. THE PHYSICAL BODY,WHAT OUR SOUL SELECTS AS THE VEHICLE IN WHICH TO HAVE OUR INTERACTIONS, THE MENTAL BODY, WHICH CONTROLS THE PHYSICAL BODY AND CAN ACT AS A TREMONDOUS BLOCK OR BRIDGE DEPENDING ON HOW IT IS USED TO FURTHER SPRIRITUAL PROGRESS, THE SPRIRITUAL BODY,THE UNMANIFEST PART OF OURSELVES WHAT WE RECOGNIZE IN OTHERS, LIKE WHEN WE FIRST MEET SOMEONE AND KNOW WE KNOW THEM,AND THE EMOTIONAL BODY, THE STICKY AND MOST EARTH BOUND PART OF HUMANS. THE EMOTIONAL BODY KNOWS NO SENSE OF TIME OF SPACE IT IS COMPLETELY SELF SEFFECIENT AND CAN ONLY BE ACCESSED BY THE SPIRITUAL BODY, AND SO IT IS UP TO US TO BECOME AWARE ENOUGH TO QUICKEN OUR FREQUENCY SO THAT THE EMOTIONAL BODY CAN LIGHTEN AND RELEASE THE INFINITE AMOUNT OF PAIN AND ANGER AND EXPERIENCE THAT IS HELD THERE, TO COME INTO THE LIGHT. THERE IS SO MUCH IN THIS BOOK, COSMIC ORGASM, ASTRAL ENERGETICS,THE UNENDING PULSATION OF LIFE AND DEATH, AND THAT AS WE PROCEED THAT TOO WILL BECOME UNNECESSARY FOR OUR GROWTH. A STUNNING AND YES VERY CHALLENGING BOOK, VERY VERY VERY MUCH WORTH THE EFFORT.

Gemini (Astroanalysis Series)
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (October, 1986)
Authors: American Astroanalysis Institute and Jove
Average review score:

A great book for the Gemini of the world
This is a great book for any Gemini. It has a lot if useful information about us air signs.

One of the best astrology book series
This book goes way beyond most other astrology serial books... Very in depth and a great analysis tool... They could have easily integrated all 12 signs into one book since most of the text is repeated from sign to sign, but then they won't make as much money. A wonderful book to start with before getting into full scale chart renderings...

A Handbook of Russian Verbs: Studies of the Harriman Institute
Published in Paperback by Casa Dana Books (December, 1989)
Author: Frank J. Miller
Average review score:

A very good comprehensive book of Russian verbs.
Frank Miller has done a wonderful job reviewing each verb and how to use them in sentences. The structure of the book first shows how the verb is used and then give the student a chance to use the verb in Russian. The book cover approximately 140 different verbs. I would recomend this book to students at any level of study in Russian.

A great book
This is the best Russian grammar book I have ever bought. It explains how Russians really use verbs and does not just give you a dirrect translation. It will help you speak Russian how Russians speak it. It is a must for anyone studing Russian in college, and it is escenial for anyone who has to write papers or stories in Russian.

Introduction to the Theory of Neural Computation (Santa Fe Institute Studies in the Sciences of Complexity)
Published in Hardcover by Perseus Book Group (January, 1991)
Authors: Anders Krogh, Richard G. Palmer, and John A. Hertz
Average review score:

A Broad Survey
This was a good survey, and well-grounded mathematically. It is kind of scattershot, and if you primarily want to do practical projects like predicting financial markets, a lot of the sections won't be relevant. But if you want a broad-based approach, emphasizing a variety of network designs fro different purposes, this book is very good.

Introduction to the Theory of Neural Computation
This book is written from a mathematical perspective. The book introduces the Hopfield Neural Network with history and applications. The authors solve the network problem and develop the Hebb Rule. Links are made to Ising Spin models and stochastic problems. I find this book to be one of the best written mathematical guides for Neural Networks.

Kleppner's Advertising Procedure (The Prentice Hall Series in Marketing)
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall College Div (April, 2000)
Authors: Thomas Russell, W. Ronald Lane, Otto Kleppner, William Advertising Wells, N.Y.) Fashion Institute of Technology (New York, and John Thomas Russell
Average review score:

All-in one, explains the whole enchilada. Great for students
Kleppner is the one name I think when I'm in a doubt regarding any stage of the advertising procedure. The book is not extremely intensive, but explains in a precise way each stage. It might be too USA oriented, but works fine for international students. Surely a must in every student's library.

Lincoln, the War President: The Gettysburg Lectures (Gettysburg Civil War Institute Books)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (November, 1992)
Authors: G. S. Boritt and Robert V. Bruce
Average review score:

An excellent collection of views.
Although at times the essays in this do not always focus directly on Lincoln, in one he is compared to Bismark, they all reflect the greatness of the man and his post in the Amercan Civil War. This is a must have for those interested in political control of the military, nation building, and or Lincoln.

Eminent Historians with Deep Thoughts on A.L.
"Lincoln the War President" presents seven essays, five of which are by Pulitzer Prize-winning historians, that focus specifically on Lincoln's execution of the Civil War. In "The Shadow of a Coming War," Robert V. Bruce starts the collection off with a fascinating look a the premonitions of civil war that haunted the American republic since the independence was declared, including Lincoln's reluctance to accept war as a real possibility. James M. McPherson's essay "Lincoln and the Strategy of Unconditional Surrender" catalogues Lincoln's brilliance as a "national strategist," dealing with not only military but also political and economic concerns as well. David Brion Davis looks at "The Emancipation Movement" in terms of both its promising goals and its disappointing results. In "One Among Many: The United States and National Unification," Carl N. Delger considers the Civil War as a successful attempt at true national unification, offering the counter-examples of Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Kenneth M. Stampp's essay, "One Alone? The United States and National Self-determination," explores the issue of self-determination and how the Southern struggle for independence compares to other historical examples, including the Eastern Europe after the Soviets. Not surprisingly, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. considers a historical analogy in "War and the Constitution: Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt," looking at how the pair clearly went beyond the limits of the Constitution in trying to defend the nation and the idea of freedom. Finally, Gabor S. Boritt's essay "War Opponent and War President," traces Lincoln's transformation from a Congressman denouncing the Mexican War, to the war president who wanted the Confederate Army destroyed, to a leader speaking out for reconciliation.

"Lincoln the War President" is certainly a thoughtful collection of essays that are enhanced by a concerted effort to put Lincoln's situation and actions in context, trying to keep an eye on the "big picture." In that regard the comparisons to other times and places are useful for helping history students appreciate Lincoln's virtues. While this is a book that students of Lincoln and Civil War buffs will enjoy, it should prove just as interesting to casual students of American History. The arguments it presents would certainly be provocative for both high school and college students to consider. Consequently, these essays would provide teachers with great supplementary material for teaching about Lincoln and the Civil War.

The Naval Institute Guide to Naval Writing
Published in Paperback by United States Naval Inst. (May, 1997)
Author: Robert Shenk
Average review score:

Very good reference book
This is a very good reference book for most types of formal writing, including directives, point papers, award justifications, etc. This is even used in many leadership classes. I keep this very close to my desk. The evaluation and fitrep information is some of the most current available, which isn't very common with this rapidly changing system. If you do any type of formal writing at all, this book is absolutely required.

Superb manual, a must for Navy-Marine officers
My Group CO bought this manual for all of his subordinate commands. I received one of the twenty copies and use it almost once a week to assist me with my correspondence duties. It addresses almost everything imaginable from fitness reports to letters to promotion boards and award citations to letters of extra military instruction. Although the Department of the Navy has put out a correspondence manual, it is not in as much detail and does not provide as good examples like the Guide to Naval Writing is. If you plan on being a successful officer, you will have to learn to communicate effectively. Although this book cannot do everything for you, it will get you leaps and bounds ahead of most other officers. Semper Fidelis
